One of the most transformative afternoons of my life was spent at the High Museum in Atlanta, taking in the amazing Quilts of Gee’s Bend exhibition. The spirit of creativity that was evident in the work was all the more remarkable because the artisans used whatever material they had on hand—old clothes, older quilts, feed sacks, any sort of textile scrap—and made sophisticated compositions from simple materials that others would have discarded. In developing the goods I’m making from recycled sweaters, I try to embrace the same spirit of improvisation and discovery. I’ve had pillows in mind for a good while, and this prototype set also features vintage fabric from my stash as the backing. I intend to utilize repurposed materials and textiles I already have on hand—just like the Gee’s Bend quilters—in most of these new items.
